Mr. Khan joins our Upper School Math faculty, and he is currently focused on Pre-Calculus instruction. Previously Mr. Khan taught mathematics at the college level at Queens College then York College as an adjunct lecturer/mathematics instructor. Most recently, he worked as a math instructor for the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) for their CUNYStart and MathStart Program.
While at BMCC Mr. Khan worked alongside our Director of Student Affairs for Gr. 8-11 Dr. Diana Cruz and Dean of the Middle School Lauren Fisher before they joined BASIS Independent Brooklyn. Dr. Cruz and Ms. Fisher both highly recommended Mr. Khan, and they personally recruited him to our school based on his outstanding experience inspiring students in math and mathematical literacy at a pre-college and college level.
Prior to teaching, Mr. Khan worked in the finance industry for more than 12 years as a research analyst. He began lecturing at Queens College during this time. That was when he realized how rewarding teaching could be, and the last eight years he has taught exclusively.
“I have a strong desire to see my students succeed, to support them and challenge them, to see them go on to become better learners,” said Mr. Khan. “Many years of teaching have given me insight into student thinking, processing, struggles, and keen insight into pedagogy, self-reflection, and a need to see improvement.”
Mr. Khan graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry and minor in math. He also happens to be a graduate of Stuyvesant High School where he first focused on Algebra and Pre-Calculus. In his spare time, he enjoys music and staying up on all technology developments, stemming from his many years as an analyst in the sector.
