Mr. D'Amato earned his bachelor's degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a double major in English literature and creative writing. He then moved to New York City to attend Brooklyn College and complete a Master of Arts degree in English literature with a focus in the early modern period. During his course of study, he was heavily mystified by the topic of ancient and medieval alchemy. Moreover, while at Brooklyn College, he helped establish the school's first Graduate English Conference, which drew scholastic participants from all over the country.
He is currently a Subject Expert Teacher who instructs 7th - 9th grade students in English Language Arts, Literature, and Writing. "I cannot express how excited I am to be teaching at BASIS Independent Brooklyn! Growing up with and truly getting to know my students has really proven to me that being an educator is my lifelong passion and calling," Mr. D'Amato says.
"I found my way to BASIS Independent Brooklyn by following my lifelong enthusiasm for teaching students of all ages to read. In the past eight years, I have worked as a dedicated Professor of English and Writing at both Brooklyn College and York College of the City University of New York (CUNY), and as an expert 6th - 12th grade English and Language Arts teacher at other private institutions in the Greater New York City Area. While I specialize in Language Arts, Rhetoric, Composition, and Literature, I have also created and taught specialty research courses in film and drama," he says.
When not in the classroom, "I mind my backyard vegetable garden in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Most evenings after completing my homework, you'll find me toiling over my latest culinary creation in the kitchen with my wife. My dog, Charlie, and my two cats, Basil and Sage, are always close by at mealtime too. I am a deep lover of music too, especially vinyl records, and I have been an active dance and hip-hop DJ for over ten years."
