Project Title: Soldiers and Stallions: A Quantitative Research Screener on PTSD Equine Treatment
BASIS Advisor: Mr. Hirsch
Internship Location: GallopNYC/Endeavors Stables
Onsite Mentor: Dianne Garcia
This project, in partnership with the Wounded Warrior Foundation, will identify which combination of variables and markers are the strongest predictors of which veterans with PTSD would benefit most from equine-assisted therapy, in addition to existing traditional PTSD therapies, and from which type (THR or EAGALA)? Can this be codified to improve and amplify results of equine-assisted therapy randomized control trials?
My Posts
Week 11: Final week before 2nd presentation.
Hi Everyone, Once again its a week before I present again and even though the Wounded Warrior addition to the screener wasn’t able to implement in time, I was able to add more to future research to the overall presentation. Thanks to: Mr. Hirsch Ms. Goldfarb Dianne Garcia (GallopNYC) Laura Ciavardini (Endeavors Stables) Laura Berghammer […]
Week 10: Future Research (Continued)
Future research should be conducted between the two different types of EAT: PATH and EAGALA. Due to their differences in treatment approach, it may benefit veterans in different ways. Potentially, I can see recommending PATH/therapeutic riding for vets who are extremely uncomfortable talking, and EAGALA for those not ready for the level of talking and […]
Week 9: Implementation of PCL-5 for future Research
Hi Everyone, Due to limitations of my screener: Does not capture veterans who may not have been diagnosed with PTSD Does not capture severity of PTSD Does not capture time between diagnosis and treatment Effect of self-administration vs. clinician-administration Veterans underrepresented in SurveyMonkey panel (7% vs 10%) Veterans may be hesitant to discuss PTSD with […]
Week 8: Preparing for In-School AP Research presentation
Hi Everyone, Even though AP Research students are finished with our AP Research presentations, I still am updating my presentation in order to add more information about how the Wounded Warrior project will aid my screener. In addition, the Wounded Warrior project has informed me that while they won’t be able to implement my screener […]
Week 7: Attempting to expand the screener tool
Hi Everyone, Although my AP Research project is now completed, the screener can’t be validated as a clinical screener tool that mental health professionals and researchers can use due to the limited data and method of administration. To better expand my screener tool, I will continue to works with the Wounded Warrior Foundation but until […]
Week 6: Finished Project
Hi Everyone, I hope you’re doing well. I have finally finished my AP Research project presentation and paper after 6 weeks of designing my screener and collecting data. For my future research, I hope to gather more data on a larger scale through the Wounded Warrior Foundation (WW); by distributing to a broader range of […]
AP Research Week 5: Final week and presentations
Hi everyone, I hope you are all doing well. This is the final week before the AP Research presentation and paper submission. Last week I outlined some implications of my results and how they changed my overall perception of my project. Since this week I will only be preparing to present my findings and submit […]
AP Research week 4: Research paper
Hi everyone, It’s about a week and a half until the AP Research deadline and I’m currently in the process of writing up my research paper. From the data responses I have found three key implications: 1st, the correlation between time to diagnosis and completion of the treatment indicate that the longer a veteran waited […]
AP Research Week 3: Progress with the screener
Hi Everyone, I hope you all are doing well. I finally was able to make some progress with my revised screener, gathering 16 individual data responses from distributing my screener through the software company, Survey Monkey. In addition to this, I’m gather other individual data responses from veterans at the Queens VA hospital but will […]
AP Research week 2: A change of plans
Hi Everyone! I hope you’re doing well this week. As I addressed in the last post I was working towards sending out my survey through the Wounded Warrior Foundation but I ran into a roadblock. Due to my research being the first of its kind that Wounded Warrior has collaborated with, there are many legal […]
AP Research Week 1 (Roadmap and 1st Blog Entry)
Hi fellow students and faculty members! My name is Oliver Kuo and it’s my pleasure to be documenting my journey through my AP Research project. AP Research is similar to the senior project except I have to write a research paper in addition to the end-of-year presentation. For my project, I’m creating a research screener […]
