Week 7: The Power of Healthy Teenage Habits

In a world, where it is easy to become complacent, rushing home after a busy day more often than not, we prefer not to think about how being inactive impacts, not just our physical health, but our health in many different ways. As teenagers grow and develop, it’s essential to establish healthy habits that will set them on the path to a fulfilling life. Regular exercise, healthy eating, and adequate sleep are crucial for their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how an effective consistent routine of going to the gym, developing and maintaining a healthy diet, and sleeping the proper amount over the course of three months can improve a teenager’s development. Physical activity is crucial for teenagers’ physical health as it helps build muscle mass, improve cardiovascular health, and increase bone density. A consistent routine of going to the gym can help teenagers achieve these benefits. Moreover, a balanced and healthy diet plays a vital role in the physical development of teenagers. A nutritious diet provides the necessary nutrients for growth and development, including protein, calcium, and vitamins. Sleep is also critical for development. During sleep, the body repairs and rejuvenates itself. According to the National Sleep Foundation (article), teenagers require 8-10 hours of sleep per night to function at their best. Inadequate sleep can lead to fatigue, decreased cognitive function, and even depression. In addition to physical health benefits, regular exercise, a healthy diet, and adequate sleep can positively impact mental health. Exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety in teenagers. According to a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health (article), regular exercise can improve teenagers’ mood, self-esteem, and overall well-being. Furthermore, a healthy diet can also play a role in mental health. A diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains has been associated with reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety in teenagers. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine (article), consuming a Western-style diet, high in processed foods, has been linked to an increased risk of depression.

    Hey MA, I was wondering if there are varying effects on depression/anxiety depending on which type of exercise you do. Would the psychological effects of doing an hour of cardio be different from those of an hour of weightlifting?
