Week 5: My First SEL Lesson!

Hi!

This week, I finally started teaching SEL lessons. I decided to focus the lesson on kind words, something they were really struggling with that week. We wanted to emphasize that their mean words seriously impact each other. To do so, we gave them each mini tubes of toothpaste and asked them to squeeze out as much as they could. After doing so, they were instructed to put the toothpaste back into the tubes.

This lesson symbolizes how hurtful words cannot be unheard, just as the toothpaste cannot be put back into the tube. At the end of the lesson, students shared how this made them feel. While some did not find the lesson amusing, most shared their heartfelt thoughts and apologies for the way that they speak to their classmates.
