Week 0: Introduction

Mar 18, 2022

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Luc Mazzanobile, and I am a senior at BASIS Independent Brooklyn. I have been at BASIS since 6th grade. I am passionate about climate change and environmental science and will be further pursuing a degree in environmental science at Johns Hopkins University next year.

My senior project aims to find the best ways to educate middle and high school students on environmental science and climate change through an afterschool program at the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle (BGCNR). These students haven’t had much exposure to STEM and environmental science, so I am excited to bring these values to the BGCNR community.

I will be working at the BGCNR Remington clubhouse over the course of my senior project. I will conduct a pre-survey before the program begins to gauge students’ interest in environmental science knowledge and topics. Based upon these results and academic literature, as well as a BGCNR afterschool program template, I will shape the curriculum and then implement it in an afterschool program. At the end of the program, I will conduct a survey that assesses the program’s effectiveness and inquire what methods students enjoyed most.

Looking forward to seeing the progress of this project, Luc! It sounds very exciting, especially since environmental education should be a larger part of today’s middle and high school programs. Keep up the good work!
