Week 10: Final Blog Post

This week is the final week of the senior project and the last blog post. This week was spent working on the senior project final presentation as well as finalizing and rehearsing it. 

In conclusion, my project was aimed at answering the question, “How can we make sustainability the number one criteria young people (age 14-18) use when buying clothing?”. While I did not find the complete answer I was able to make some progress on how in the future this question can be answered. 

Through the course of this project I learned a couple of key things. Through the research that I did for finding sustainable clothing brands I learned that there is a lot of green washing especially in global brands. Additionally I learned that there is a range of sustainability, just like anything else there are different levels of sustainability and different ways that sustainability takes form. On the positive side there are a lot of unique and cool brands that are emerging that are sustainable and hopefully brands like these continue to emerge and grow. 

Through the experiment element of the project I learned that there is a long way to go for sustainability to be at the forefront of consumer’s decision making. There is a divide between messaging that producers are putting on their products and the way that people are using that information when it comes to sustainability. 

In the future I would like to continue to work on a project that aims to find ways to make sustainability the number one criteria teenagers use when buying clothing. Sustainability is the future of the fashion industry and to be able to bring sustainability to the younger generation of consumers is critical.
