Week Zero: An Introduction to Breaking Into The Music Business

Hello everyone! My name is Asha Wills, and I’ve been a student at BASIS for seven years. Having been a music enthusiast for as long as I can remember, I was always curious about the behind the scene process artists go through to create songs and release them to their listeners. Last year I took Digital Music Production as an elective, which really allowed me to experience the creative process of composing music. With this project, I will focus on the strategic side of music production, with emphasis on different methods current small artists can use to share their music. Because of my interest in listening to and understanding music, I decided to perform a research study on how small artists grow an audience. The research question I intend to answer is: How do emerging artists successfully use custom labels, social media, and streaming platforms to break into the music business?

Independently, I will do my own research by examining and collecting important information from available literature reviews using academic databases such as Google Scholar and JSTOR. Additionally, I plan on watching productive documentaries that will also aid me in my research. I also hope to conduct interviews with individuals already in the music business, such as small artists and artist managers. I hope that my project will allow people to recognize the importance of supporting their favorite artists, outside of just streaming their music. The final goal of my research is to determine how artists use the resources available to them today to rise to success.

    Your project sounds very interesting. Will you be comparing artists’ success across various streaming platforms?

    This is really interesting Asha! I am very curious to see what you find for your project, for myself, I tend to forget about the emerging artists who have yet to break into the music business. I think this research would be very useful to those who are trying to break into the music industry.

The results from your research could be really useful to small artists seeking to form a career out of their passion. I also love that you are focusing on lesser-known artists, since there are certainly many innovative musicians out there who deserve a larger audience!
