Ms. Simmons

Auxiliary Programs Coordinator

Born and raised in Queens, Ms. Simmons is a true New Yorker, experiencing the melting pot that is easily dubbed one of the most diverse places on earth. As a teenager she thought the most important thing to do was too follow opportunity, so she headed on public transport to Brooklyn Technical High School. Later she continued her studies at Howard University, where she received a Bachelor of Science in human development and psycho-educational studies.

Prior to joining the BASIS Independent Brooklyn team, Kyana worked as a substitute teacher and in afterschool management at school in Washington DC. Ms. Simmons managed all classroom-specific aspects of the afterschool program ranging from safe dismissals, cultivating afterschool activities, and workshops. The position also required her to manage a team of six K-2 aftercare classroom staff. Ms. Simmons also served as a college supervisor for a high school STEM internship at the New York School Construction Authority; placing and managing summer interns at various NYC companies, and creating student workshops.

At BASIS Independent Brooklyn, Ms. Simmons looks forward to watching the drive of students extend from academic excellence to leadership and commitment to clubs as they grow with our community.
