Ms. Zhang is proud to bring her passion of teaching Mandarin to BASIS Independent Brooklyn. She enjoys helping students learn the language she loves and explore Chinese history and culture. Her goal in class is for students to learn Mandarin using relevant situations and topics including greetings, seasons, animals, community, food as well as explaining hobbies, visiting friends, and making appointments.
Ms. Zhang includes the geography and culture of China in her lessons. “Students will ultimately broaden their cultural horizons through the exploration of a different language and culture,” said Ms. Zhang.
Ms. Zhang received her master’s degree in adolescent education majoring in foreign language education (Chinese) from Hunter College, City University of New York. She received her bachelor’s degree majoring in Chinese from Queens College, City University of New York.
Ms. Zhang spent more than 20 years teaching in a top elementary school in her hometown of Kai Feng City, China. She also observed and taught at top, selective New York City public schools while finishing her master’s degree. “I decided the BEST school will be my smartest choice professional. I am very lucky because BASIS Independent Brooklyn is my dream school.”
Outside the classroom, Ms. Zhang pursues her hobbies of calligraphy and paper-cutting.
